My Students' Today's Writing


I was teaching a six-grade level class today. And as usual, I gave them some exercises to do. There were 9 students in the class, and I divided the class into 3 groups, and each group was composed of 3 students.

I gave several exercises focusing on “Simple Past”. There were actually 4 exercises. I give the two first exercises, and they did it in more than forty minutes, which is for me, it takes too long. The next exercise was still simple past exercise. This exercise required students to answer the gap by choosing a right word from the words provided. This exercise can be done in 10 minutes. So amazing they were that I forget it is because I only gave them that 10 minutes and if they hadn’t done the exercise in the given time, I would take the exercise no matter what.

The last exercise was the most difficult exercise for students. It was because this exercise was writing exercise. They aren’t used to doing this kind of exercise at their school. So, as I gave this exercise, they began to grumble. But I had prepared for such a complaint, and I successfully forced them to do the exercise. The available time was only 20 minutes. I told them that they must, at least, write 5 lines in 20 minutes. They tried to bargain as if I were a fruit seller. Again, no is the only word that came out from my lips.

Time passed, it was 5 minutes before the class ended. As I checked them, I found that they barely wrote 5 lines. I encouraged them to write faster, as I only saw them verbalize their idea of writing but they didn’t even write their idea into writing. 5 minutes later, the bell rang, and I took the paper. From the three groups, there were two groups that wrote 5 lines of story, and another just wrote one line.
Here are their writings. The bolded italicized sentences are what my students write.

Group 1
Last Saturday was a very strange day for me. First I got up at about seven o’clock in the morning, and after that I went downstairs to have breakfast with my family. I was drinking a glass of orange juice when, suddenly, the phone rang. “Stewart, you have to come to my place,” my friend said. “Please be here in thirty minutes. I need your help!” Then he hung up the phone.
Than I ran to Bingbong’s house. When I got there, Bingbong was cooked some water, but he can’t turned off the stove. Then I was mad at him. I said “you just call me for that!’. Than when I was yelled at him, the fire tuned more bigger.

Group 2
Last Saturday was a very strange day for me. First I got up at about seven o’clock in the morning, and after that I went downstairs to have breakfast with my family. And then I go to my friend home. Because her cat is died.

Group 3

And then I go to my friends home. For help my friends. When I came to my friends and she sad, because her mom left to go about 3 years. Her mom go to London. And then she thank you for coming.

Those what my students wrote. As you can see, some of them had written good story ide though there were some grammatical errors. But for Indonesia students, who rarely do a writing exercise, what they had written is fairly good.
